Top Five Ways to Boost Your Immune System

We are all going through a difficult time right now. At Total Nutrition and Therapeutics, we’ve written a letter for our community to ensure that everyone is prepared. In our last blog, we began the discussion on how to prepare yourself so you can be protected.

With the coronavirus outbreak, there is no better time to get proactive about our immune systems. Today, we’re going to cover a group of measures that you can employ to help protect every aspect of your health.

Sleep and rest

Though a mystery to many, sleep is one of the most critical measures for maintaining health and overall wellness. As we sleep, our bodies repair and fight back against illnesses and contagions that have taken root. Getting enough sleep is vital for mental and physical health and can significantly improve your quality of life.

Allow your body to get plenty of rest, which equates to about 8 hours of sleep each night for most people. If you become sick, be sure to take naps throughout the day and ask your healthcare provider for advice about how long you should rest before returning to work or other everyday activities.

Wash your hands often

Preventing the spread of germs starts with taking care of the two parts of our body that we use the most: our hands. The CDC shows that hand-washing is the most effective method in preventing illness.

Use soap and water. Use liquid disinfectants and hand sanitizers when soap and water aren’t available. And most important of all, wash your hands after you use the bathroom. Though the coronavirus has captured our fears at the moment, the majority of illnesses still spread as a result of our own behavior, or lack thereof.

Don’t smoke

We all know that smoking can cause lung damage, along with serious, long-term illnesses. We also know that nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes are particularly harmful to overall wellness. But smoking, because of the damage it causes to the lungs, greatly increases the chances of getting sick.

Smoking can also prolong illnesses. If you are currently a smoker, please talk to your healthcare provider about quitting.

Healthy eating

Eating healthily may sound simple, but as many of us know, it can be difficult to implement in our lives.

Fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins help fuel our bodies with efficient macro- and micronutrients. Furthermore, the proteins, healthy fats, complex carbs, and vitamins and minerals can keep our immune systems running at the highest level, warding off potential illnesses.

It can be a chore to prepare healthy foods. By making it a habit, we stop going through the mental strain of obtaining and preparing such foods. There are tons of recipes online that help us turn healthy foods into delicious dishes, and the nutritional coaches at Total Nutrition and Therapeutics are here to help you find the best nutritional balance for your individual wellness goals

Maintain vigilance

Remember, these are just a few of the many ways in which we can help keep ourselves healthy. Most of all, it’s important to keep your health in mind. By doing this, you will inherently make sure to enact the measures we have discussed above.

Be sure to continue checking in with us as we continue to provide crucial information about maintaining your health and happiness, particularly during this difficult time!
